DVD review: Dumb Money

In amongst news of lockdowns and vaccinations, 2021 also saw the short squeeze on shares of dwindling retailer GameStop make the headlines, leading to the ‘war on Wall Street’ between everyday stock sellers and major hedge fund managers. Based upon the best-selling book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich, this inspiring true story has been adapted for the big screen by director Craig Gillespie. Comedy drama Dumb Money centres around analyst turned YouTube celebrity Keith Gill (Paul Dano) who encouraged his online audience to invest in the video game store under his internet alias Roaring Kitty. Through the personal stories of nurse Jennifer (America Ferrara), students Harmony (Talia Ryder) and Riri (Myha’la Herrold), businessman Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen) and more, the film explores the ripple effects of this controversial financial advice.

Film review: Bodies Bodies Bodies

 Moving from in front of the camera to behind it, Dutch actress-turned director Halina Reijn takes a stab at a social satire slasher with her English-language debut, Bodies Bodies Bodies. Adapted from an original story by Cat Person author Kristen Roupenian, the plot sees Sophie (Amandla Stenberg) and her new girlfriend Bee (Maria Bakalova) join pals for a hurricane party thrown by David (Pete Davidson) at his family’s mansion. The couple, along with Alice (Rachel Sennott), Greg (Lee Pace), Jordan (Myha’la Herrold) and Emma (Chase Sui Wonders), decide to do a murder mystery roleplay, but when quietly held grudges and scandalous secrets bubble to the surface, it takes a very dark turn.

DVD review: The King of Staten Island

Judd Apatow’s movies have been the gateway drug to cinema for the likes of Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, and Amy Schumer, and his latest effort The King of Staten Island introduces another new face. Plucked from the Saturday Night Live breeding ground of talent, Pete Davidson stars as Scott Carlin, a twentysomething layabout that spends his days tattooing himself or anyone that’ll let him near enough with a needle. When his younger sister flees the family nest for college and his mum Margie (Marisa Tomei) gets a new boyfriend, he is forced to finally grow up, and part of this process is the coming to terms with the loss of his firefighter father.
